Hazardous waste is defined as any toxic, biologic, infectious, or radioactive material that can harm individuals in their homes or cause harm to workers through exposure at their place of work. However, the definition is broadened when it comes to residential and business waste pick up. This is because there are a number of chemicals that when disposed of by individuals and businesses, can cause harm to the workers picking up the trash. It is possible for these workers to receive such injuries as chemical burns, internal damage from fumes, damage to their eyes, etc. That is why other provisions are made for the disposal of harmful waste items.
What is considered harmful?
What is considered hazardous waste and what is not depends on the trash pickup company. It depends on what kind of vehicles they are using, what types of equipment they have available at their facility, and what kind of safety precautions are put in place. Some companies have a department that can process hazardous waste, while others do not.
If the trash pickup company does not have a hazardous waste system put in place, the types of materials most likely listed as hazardous waste are:
• Paint and other materials related to paint such as varnish, paint thinner, solvent-based stains and paints, cleaner for paintbrushes, and paint stripper. Latex paint is the exception because it is not considered hazardous.
• Flammable materials such as gasoline and kerosene.
• Chemicals such as Mercury, Asbestos, products made of lead, photo developing chemicals, PCBs, and paints used by artists. For proper disposal of these items, it is important to check with the residing state.
• Outdoor products such as fertilizers, pesticides, chemicals for the swimming pool, and propane cylinders used on gas grills.
• Carpet cleaning materials and spot removers.
• Automotive waste such as batteries, engine coolant, brake fluid, products used in auto body repair, degreasers, and motor oil that has been used are considered hazardous. In regards to the used motor oil, there are designated areas and certain procedures in which motor oil can be disposed of. This information can be obtained from local government, the internet, or from a local oil change company.
How to dispose of these items
There is nothing that cannot be thrown away, but certain materials need special care and there are certain areas that are designated for these materials. For those who must dispose of hazardous materials, the internet makes a great resource for finding a local company that will properly and professionally dispose of them. If not sure, a local trash removal company or a recycling center may have the information needed. It is also ideal to contact the individual in charge of trash pickup in the closest city to acquire that information.
Although there are specifications as to what can be considered hazardous, hazardous waste does find its way into residential trash bags without the garbage pickup crew knowing. This can be very harmful to them, so it is very important to find out what your trash pickup company will and will not pick up in order to dispose of it properly. Each hazardous item that finds its way into a trash bag could be endangering the health of those who must work around it for long periods of time. Proper disposal protects the health of all of those involved.

How many people do you know that have junk and boxes piled up so high in their garage that they are unable to park their car inside? Have a basement that is more like a labyrinth than living space with junk around every corner, or a backyard shed that is no longer useable?
Spring time is a great time to get rid of all of your unwanted junk and free up your living space, so it can be enjoyed! Not only is junk an unsightly space waster, it is also a fire hazard. Just think of some of the items you store throughout your home, boxes of old clothes, books and linens, old or broken appliances and electronics, E-waste and old furniture. The list of items removed from people’s homes is lengthy and sometimes odd! Nonetheless, it is easy to see how storing these items in your home can be dangerous, adding fuel to any potential fire.
According to Fire Prevention Canada, residential fires are one of the greatest threats to the health and safety of your family, accounting for 73% of total fire deaths in Canada. One of the best ways to protect your family from this risk is to be proactive and have your junk removed from your garage, basement or shed this spring.
There are a number of benefits associated with junk removal aside from fire prevention. Storing old clothes and linens can accelerate the growth of molds and give dust mites more room to grow. Both of these allergens can cause discomfort in children and adults with asthma or breathing problems, giving you even more reason to be rid of the junk taking up space in your home.
If you are considering making a clean sweep in your home, not only will getting rid of your unwanted items free up precious space, it will also help you make a fresh start this spring!

When researching junk removal companies online, you may see that many of them say that they will take away just about anything. If it is junk, they will take it and dispose of in the proper way. Some materials require a certain method of disposal and a junk removal company can take care of that and do it at a reasonable rate. Basically, if it is taking up space and you don’t need it, then it is junk that needs to be taken away.
However, they will take away “just about” anything, so what is it they will not take away? Well, it isn’t much. In fact, it is so little and many people do not have too much of this that they request a junk removal company to haul away. What is being referred to here is hazardous waste. That is the one thing that junk removal companies will not haul away. But that still leaves a lot of questions as to what they will haul away, which more or less depends on the individual’s definition of junk. Simply saying that they will haul away everything but hazardous waste still brings about confusion, so here is a better idea of the materials being referred to:
• Appliances such as the refrigerator, a freezer, a dishwasher, or range
• Office or household junk such as furniture, desks, coffee tables, and chairs
• Paper goods such as cardboard, newspapers, magazines, and books
• Construction waste such as drywall, plaster, carpeting, and roofing
• Old electronics such as video game consoles, stereos, televisions, and computers
• Gardening waste such as dead plants, mulch and soil
• Plywood and lumber
• Mattresses and box springs
• Tire rims and rubber tires
• Metal
These items give you a pretty good idea as to what a garbage removal company will haul away for you. As you can see, there isn’t much that they won’t take. They basically take what the garbage man can’t take, will refuse to take, or will charge an arm and a leg to take to the dump. If you have ever put out a large amount of cardboard or other junk with your garbage to be picked up on garbage day, you may have noticed that the cardboard was left behind. Garbage companies also have a tendency to not take items that are over a certain weight.
However, the garbage man cannot take certain metals any harder than aluminum or tin because some companies use compactors that could become damaged by hard metals. Any time there is a metal that needs to be disposed of, a junk removal company is the way to go. They can dispose of it in the proper way. Even if the garbage company agrees to do it, they may charge an extra amount that would exceed the amount charged by the junk removal company. This is because the garbage company may not be entirely equipped to handle such items like the junk removal company is.
That is why it is a good idea to stick with the waste removal company that has the tools and the know-how to dispose of your junk the way that it is meant to be disposed of. They are also able to do it quickly at an affordable rate so that you will not have to pay a large amount to regain control of your home or property that was once overrun with junk. Just be sure to not be afraid to ask them to take away certain items because, aside from hazardous waste, a junk removal will take anything that you define as junk.

There is a lot of junk in people’s homes, in their offices, and on their property that can be an eyesore. Junk can also attract a number of pests that can make the area rather unsanitary. That is why it is very important to contact a junk removal company that will dispose of the junk properly. But what exactly is the proper method that junk removal companies use to dispose of all of that stuff? Does it go straight to a landfill? Does it sit on their property for a while? Many do wonder this.
Well, if you have ever heard the saying, “another man’s junk is another man’s treasure,” then junk removal is the perfect example and probably provides an adequate answer to the question for some. However, there is a system that the junk removal service uses that is quite commendable, which is one of the things that makes junk removal companies so great.
Furniture, Household items, metal, electronics, etc.
If you’ve ever seen a couch sitting in an alley by a garbage can or on a street corner, it is probably there because the owner of it wants someone to take it. That is an open invitation to get it off of their hands. When the junk removal company takes that piece of furniture, household item, scrap metal, or other item(s) off of your hands, they do a little something different with it. They don’t throw it into a dump somewhere where it will rot and become infested with field mice, snakes, or some other animals. They will donate it to charities that can use it. Such organizations as Goodwill and others that give items to families in need can actually use the furniture to help a family furnish their home. Sometimes these are families that have been displaced by fire or some other unfortunate event in which they need furniture. The same goes for appliances. If it is broken and it can be fixed, it will be fixed and given to a family. However, if it is not feasible to fix it, it can be recycled.
Paper goods, aluminum, and plastic
When a junk removal company picks up items such as cardboard, plastic bottles, and aluminum-based items, these will most likely be taken to a recycling center so that they can be turned into usable products. Where these items could otherwise be taken to a landfill, the junk removal company makes sure that these materials get a second chance to serve society instead of wasting away in a dump somewhere and serving no purpose aside from polluting the environment.
Green waste and soil
Sometimes soil can be usable and many greenhouses would love to have some good soil to use. Instead of taking soil to the dump, some junk removal companies will donate it to greenhouses and nurseries if it is usable. If it is not usable, then that and green waste could go to the landfill, but they are not as harmful to the environment as the materials mentioned above. Actually, they are natural products of the environment. Now sometimes green waste can be used in lakes and ponds to create better habitats for aquatic life, depending on the condition of the plant.
So as you can see, much of the junk that is picked up by junk removal companies can somehow be transformed into a new product or reused in some way. There is no need for things that can be reused to be thrown away when they can serve another purpose and benefit displaced families, lower consumer costs, and benefit businesses.
